        "abstract": "Specimens of single and polycrystalline ingot iron were tested in a rotary bending fatigue machine and examined microscopically in order to check previous observations of slip and to study the nature of crack formation and growth. As has been reported, slip takes place on surfaces of high shear stress parallel to a <111> direction in the crystal lattice. In contrast to recent work, the slip was found to occur on wavy surfaces rather than pairs of crystallographic planes.\r\n\r\nFatigue cracks were found to follow surfaces of high shear stress containing a <111> direction. The conclusion that fatigue failures are primarily shear failures is strengthened by a statistical explanation of the mechanism by which a microscopic shear failure can lead to the apparent tension failure commonly observed in rotary bending tests on polycrystalline iron. Microscopic observation of the polycrystalline specimens revealed that cracks originate at the grain boundaries before 30,000 cycles in a specimen which would very probably run for at least 106,000 cycles."

        "abstract": "<p>A rather extensive treatment of the stresses in fuselage main bulkheads is given in NACA Technical Report No. 509. The Least work equations developed in the report are for the most general case. The examples given are for concentrated loads, which are in balance, and applied. at various points on a circular bulkhead.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>Now the shear loads which are transmitted by the skin and stiffeners to a main ring exist in the form of a distributed load which varies around the bulkhead.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>The purpose of\u00b7 this paper is to present an analysis pf a main bulkhead in which the wing reactions a.re balanced by a varying distributed load around the bulkhead. The shear distribution although not exact because of the interaction of skin and stiffeners, seems however, closer to the actual existing conditions than would be a case in which the shear loads are treated as concentrated loads.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>To somewhat simplify the energy equations the bending and torsional shears were treated separately, the work due to the shear and axial load deformations were also neglected. The error introduced is relatively small.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>In the particular airplane to which this solution was applied 80% of the fuselage cross section area consisted of skin and the remaining 20% consisted of stiffeners. Hence the shear transferred by the skin is of major importance.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>The case chosen as an illustrative example is an unsymmetrical condition since this is the most general case.</p>"

        "abstract": "The problem of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe railroad in Pasadena is a very dynamic one, as is readily recognized by engineers, city officials, and laymen.  The route of the railroad was first laid out in the eighties and because of certain liberal concessions granted by the City of Pasadena, the right-of-way was located through Pasadena, despite the fact that the grade coming into the city either from Los Angeles or San Bernardino was enormous.  Some years later, other transcontinental routes of the Santa Fe out of Los Angles were sought, and a right-of-way was obtained by way of Fullerton and Riverside to San Bernardino, where this route joins the one from Los Angeles through Pasadena.  This route, however, is ten miles longer than the one through Pasadena, which means a considerable loss of time in a short diversion of approximately only sixty miles in length."

        "abstract": "During the past few years the attention of\r\narchitects, engineers and others encased in or connected\r\nwith the building industry has been attracted\r\nto the possibilities of the application of welding\r\nprocesses to the joining of structural members.\r\nAs oxy-acetylene welding was developed before electric\r\narc welding became perfected it was only natural\r\nthat the gas torch should be first considered.\r\nIt developed however on examination of the two processes\r\nthat while acetylene welding gave better results\r\nin most cases it was only in the hands of experts\r\nthat it could consistently outscore the arc\r\nas a welding medium. Arc-welding has the advantage\r\nover the acetylene process, where each individual\r\noperator must use his own judgement as to the proper\r\nflame, in that a squad of arc-welders can work\r\nunder the direction of a single expert supervisor\r\nwho accepts the responsibility of fixing the current\r\nvalue and of determining the proper size of\r\nwelding rod to be used on any given type of work."

The\r\ngrowth of a city from 50,600 to 576,000, an increase of over 1000%\r\nin thirty years is an unprecedented occurrence. It has given rise\r\nto a variety of problems of increasing magnitude.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>Chief among these are: supply of food, water and shelter development of industry and markets, prevention and removal\r\nof downtown congestion and protection of life and property.\r\nThese, of course, are the problems that any city must face.\r\nBut in the case of a community which doubles its population\r\nevery ten years, radical and heroic measures must often be\r\ntaken.</p>"

        "abstract": "In work of this nature it is advisable to state definitely\r\nthe problem attempted in order that the reader may have a clear understanding\r\nof the object of the work undertaken. The problem involved\r\nis to determine the efficiency and inefficiency in the operation of\r\nthe Bureau of Power and Light of Los Angeles, California, as it exists\r\nat the present time. This will be more on the order of a government\r\ninvestigation than a purely engineering thesis. An engineering thesis\r\nconsists or reports based on experiments and tests, etc., while the\r\npresent undertaking will consist of investigation of the facts concerning\r\nthe organization, operation and conduct of the business of the\r\nBureau of Power and Light. The facts presented were obtained from\r\nseveral sources: (1) the writer's knowledge of the business; (2) books\r\nwritten on municipal ownership; (3) reports published by the Bureau, and\r\n(4) personal interviews with men connected with the organization.         "abstract": "The disposal of sewage is the most important item in public sanitation.  It is the most important present day problem in every city whether large or small.  The direct cause of the majority of epidemics is the contamination of the water supply of the city by the excreta of man or animal.  Public health varies directly as public sanitation, and if the public sanitation be good, the liability of sickness caused by contamination of the water supply is greatly lessened.  When a city outgrows its sewerage system the public health becomes endangered.  There are two causes for the increased amount of sewerage, increase in population and increase in industrial and manufacturing wastes.  The main problem in this connection is the ultimate disposal of the matter which reaches the sewers."

        "abstract": "<p>The object of this thesis was to determine the effect of water injection upon the fuel consumption of a gasoline engine.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>Before beginning the tests it was necessary to design and construct a new reducing motion for the indicator, the old one having proven unsatisfactory. This\r\nnew reducing motion, drawings of which may be found in the appendix, consists of an eccentric mounted on the main shaft, connecting rod, crosshead guides, etc. Care was taken in the design of this motion to keep the ratio of the throw to the length of the connecting rod the same as that of the engine itself, this being necessary in order to obtain an accurate reproduction of the mot ion of the piston.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>Duplicate tests were made at loads ranging from zero to full load of the engine and a comparison of the results obtained will be found in the balance of this thesis.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>Difficulties encountered in the construction and attachment of the reducing motion and the limited time available for this thesis made it impossible to secure\r\nenough data from which to draw positive conclusions. However, the results obtained are sufficient to indicate what may be expected, from the use of water injection devices.</p>"

        "abstract": "<p>The consideration of a Union Terminal and Car House for Pasadena is not a simple problem but involves all the larger metropolitan problems; nor is it only Pasadena that must be considered, but also the outlying cities in the metropolitan district around Pasadena. This district embracing South Pasadena, Alhambra, San Gabriel, Lamanda Park, etc. is intimately concerned in the common civic problems such as drainage and flood control, sewage and\r\ngarbage disposal, and transportation service, and any attempt to solve any of these problems with regard to a small part of this district alone must fail of the ultimate desirable solution.\r\nWhether or not these cities ever unite to form a single municipality they must inevitably get together on the solution of the larger problems.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>Transportation is probably the first of these problems in importance, since without an adequate transportation system the growth and development of a community is impossible. It is beyond the scope of this study to consider any of the larger problems besides transportation and the problems or transportation as they present themselves will now be briefly considered.</p>"

        "abstract": "<p>The title of this thesis was originally: \u201cThe Effect of Compression on the Consumption of an Internal Combustion Engine Using Gasoline, Kerosene, Distillate and Alcohol.\u201d And it was thought that it comprised afield sufficiently broad to insure the expenditure of the efforts of two men.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>Curves of the various fuels were to be obtained from: the compress ion pressures as abscissae and pounds of fuel per delivered horsepower per hour as ordinates. These curves were to be plotted from the results of a least two tests at an interval of one delivered horsepower apart ranging from zero to the maximum output of the engine; this series being re2eated at each of the four or six compress ions obtainable. Thus with a five brake horsepower engine, which was used, there would be two tests at each horsepower, at each compression, and with each fuel; making in all; assuming five different compression pressures ranging between forty-five pounds per square inch (Gage) and one hundred and ten pounds per square inch (Gage) two (tests) X five(horse power ) X five (compression pressures) X four (fuels) equals two hundred (Total number of tests).</p>\r\n\r\n<p>This figure is conservative as it would have required more than two tests in many cases in order to get anything like checking results.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>All tests were to be of not less than an hour\u2019s duration and in some cases it was hoped to run longer ones in order to procure more accurate indicated horsepower readings.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>The curves thus obtained and plotted would show at what power the maximum economy occurred for each fuel. Such curves are not to be found at this time in any source obtainable.</p>"

Stinmetz headed \"Transformation of Polyphase Systems.\" Many of the conditions obtained in unbalanced polyphase systems, while generally taken for granted, are not so backed up by published data as to give to the young engineering student any records upon which the statements given are based.</p>\r\n<p>This, together with the fact that the regular College Course as given must of necessity deal only with fundamentals, with but few digressions into the detail of any specific class of phenomena, caused me to selected for my thesis the investigation of; first, polyphase currents in general and second, a few specific instances of loading one phase only of a three phase system.</p>"

        "abstract": "<p>A proposal was made by Mr. Thum to President Scherer that certain of the students of Throop Polytechnic Institute be given the task of making a report on the Municipal Lighting Works of Pasadena. For expenditures in connection with such a report Mr. Thum very kindly offered to deposit a certain sum with the Institute. This offer was taken under consideration by the Faculty, and upon investigation of the time at the disposal of the various students, the problem was placed before the Senior Class as an elective subject for a thesis.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>This offer the Senior Class was very glad to accept, and work was commenced at the beginning of the second semester of the year 1910-1911. A rough outline of the various items to be taken up in such a report was furnished by Prof. Sorensen and later suggestions were made by Dean Damon. As actually accomplished, the work covers a detailed description of the plant and distribution system with drawings and maps, an appraisement of the property, a summary of segregated costs, capacities, etc., a statement of the general methods employed in financing public utilities, various suggestions as to possible improvements, and a partial description of the accounting system in use by the Municipal Lighting Works.</p>\r\n\r\n<p>The figures found in the summary may be considered as accurate to within five per cent. of the cost of the plant altho sufficient time was not available for a detailed study of this phase of the problem. The idea has been rather to obtain data from which rough estimates of similar equipment could be made.</p>"
