        "abstract": "Neural networks with sub-microsecond inference latency are required by many critical applications. Targeting such applications deployed on FPGAs, we present High Granularity Quantization (HGQ), a quantization-aware training framework that optimizes parameter bit-widths through gradient descent. Unlike conventional methods, HGQ determines the optimal bit-width for each parameter independently, making it suitable for hardware platforms supporting heterogeneous arbitrary precision arithmetic. In our experiments, HGQ shows superior performance compared to existing network compression methods, achieving orders of magnitude reduction in resource consumption and latency while maintaining the accuracy on several benchmark tasks. These improvements enable the deployment of complex models previously infeasible due to resource or latency constraints. HGQ is open-source. https://github.com/calad0i/hgq2 and is used for developing next-generation trigger systems at the CERN ATLAS and CMS experiments for particle physics, enabling the use of advanced machine learning models for real-time data selection with sub-microsecond latency.",

        "abstract": "Tensor network contraction is a powerful computational tool in quantum many-body physics, quantum information and quantum chemistry. The complexity of contracting a tensor network is thought to mainly depend on its entanglement properties, as reflected by the Schmidt rank across bipartite cuts. Here, we study how the complexity of tensor-network contraction depends on a different notion of quantumness, namely, the sign structure of its entries. We tackle this question rigorously by investigating the complexity of contracting tensor networks whose entries have a positive bias. We show that for intermediate bond dimension d\u2273 n, a small positive mean value \u2273 1/d of the tensor entries already dramatically decreases the computational complexity of approximately contracting random tensor networks, enabling a quasi-polynomial time algorithm for arbitrary 1/poly(n) multiplicative approximation. At the same time exactly contracting such tensor networks remains #P-hard, like for the zero-mean case. The mean value 1/d matches the phase transition point observed in previous work. Our proof makes use of Barvinok's method for approximate counting and the technique of mapping random instances to statistical mechanical models. We further consider the worst-case complexity of approximate contraction of positive tensor networks, where all entries are non-negative. We first give a simple proof showing that a multiplicative approximation with error exponentially close to one is at least StoqMA-hard. We then show that when considering additive error in the matrix 1-norm, the contraction of positive tensor network is BPP-complete. This result compares to Arad and Landau's result, which shows that for general tensor networks, approximate contraction up to matrix 2-norm additive error is BQP-complete. Our work thus identifies new parameter regimes in terms of the positivity of the tensor entries in which tensor networks can be (nearly) efficiently contracted.",

        "abstract": "<p>We present the performance of centimeter-scale AC-LGAD devices including strip sensors with varying pitch (coarse and narrow), and pixel sensors of varying metal electrode size and geometry. Strip sensors with narrow pitch provide good position reconstruction capabilities, however coarser pitch may offer better cost and performance for applications where channel count or electrical power density should be economized. Pixel sensors with a higher metal area fraction and smaller active thickness provide faster signal risetimes, leading to better time resolution capabilities. We studied the impact of various design parameters on the time and spatial resolution of these sensors and identified the guiding principles for designing sensors optimized for future collider experiments, such as the EIC.</p>",

        "abstract": "<div class=\"DetailStyles-module__abstractContent___KAqNh\">\n<div>The Probe far-Infrared Mission for Astrophysics (PRIMA) is a proposed space observatory which will use arrays of thousands of kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs) to perform low- and moderate-resolution spectroscopy throughout the far-infrared. The detectors must have noise equivalent powers (NEPs) at or below 1&times;10<sup>&minus;19</sup>&nbsp;W Hz<sup>&minus;1/2</sup>&nbsp;to be subdominant to noise from sky backgrounds and thermal noise from PRIMA&rsquo;s cryogenically cooled primary mirror. Using a Radio Frequency System on a Chip for multitone readout, we measure the NEPs of detectors on a flight-like array designed to observe at a wavelength of 210 &mu;m. We find that 92% of the KIDs measured have an NEP below 1 &times; 10<sup>&minus;19</sup>&nbsp;W Hz<sup>&minus;1/2</sup> at a noise frequency of 10 Hz.</div>\n</div>",

        "abstract": "We present a characterization of the mapping from resonant frequency to spatial position for a kilopixel kinetic inductance detector (KID) array developed for the Probe far-Infrared Mission for Astrophysics (PRIMA). This work targets the longest wavelength band of PRIMA's FIRESS spectrometer, which in total spans 24 to 235 \u03bcm. Light emitting diodes arrayed to match repeating unit cells of 16 KIDs first discriminate among unit cells. Within each unit cell, frequencies are widely spaced, so positions are discriminated by theoretical predictions of the relative frequency spacing between detectors based on KID geometries. With this mapping, we analyze board features to improve the accuracy of modeling PRIMA KIDs and inform future fabrication runs.",

        "abstract": "<div class=\"DetailStyles-module__abstractContent___KAqNh\">\n<div>The PRobe far-Infrared Mission for Astrophysics (PRIMA) is a future cryogenic space observatory that will revolutionize study of evolving galaxies and forming planetary systems with highly-sensitive far-infrared (far-IR) imaging and spectroscopy. PRIMA&rsquo;s spectrometer, the Far-InfraRed Enhanced Survey Spectrometer (FIRESS), will deploy kilo-pixel aluminum kinetic inductance detector (KID) arrays covering wavelengths from 24-235 &mu;m. Here we present optical characterization of a prototype FIRESS array operating at 25 &mu;m. We employ a blackbody modulation technique to measure the detector responsivity, and discuss methods for reducing 1/f noise from the multi-tone readout electronics. We measure an NEP below 3.5 &times; 10<sup>&minus;20</sup> W/ &radic; Hz at 10 Hz accross the array, which exceeds the requirement to be limited by the astrophysical background limit for PRIMA&rsquo;s FIRESS spectrometer. We discuss limitations of the multi-tone readout and compare results to measurements with a single-tone readout system.</div>\n</div>",

        "abstract": "Since the start of science operations in 1993, the twin 10-meter W. M. Keck Observatory (WMKO) telescopes have continued to maximize their scientific impact to produce transformative discoveries that keep the U.S. observing community on the frontiers of astronomical research. Upgraded capabilities and new instrumentation are provided though collaborative partnerships primarily with the Caltech and University of California instrument development teams and through additional collaborations with the University of Notre Dame, the University of Hawaii, Swinburne University of Technology, industry, and other organizations. This paper summarizes the status and performance of observatory infrastructure projects, technology upgrades, and new additions to the suite of observatory instrumentation. We also provide a status of instrumentation projects in early and advanced stages of development that will achieve the goals and objectives summarized in the 2023 Keck Observatory strategic plan. Developed in collaboration with the WMKO science community, the Keck strategic plan sets our sites on 2035 and meets goals identified in the Astro2020 Decadal Survey.",

        "abstract": "The Keck Planet Finder (KPF) is a fiber-fed, high-resolution, echelle spectrometer that specializes in the discovery and characterization of exoplanets using Doppler spectroscopy. In designing KPF, the guiding principles were high throughput to promote survey speed and access to faint targets, and high stability to keep uncalibrated systematic Doppler measurement errors below 30 cm s\u22121. KPF achieves optical illumination stability with a tip-tilt injection system, octagonal cross-section optical fibers, a double scrambler, and active fiber agitation. The optical bench and optics with integral mounts are made of Zerodur to provide thermo-mechanical stability. The spectrometer includes a slicer to reformat the optical input, green and red channels (445\u2013600 nm and 600\u2013870 nm), and achieves a resolving power of \u223c97,000. Additional subsystems include a separate, medium-resolution UV spectrometer (383\u2013402 nm) to record the Ca II H K lines, an exposure meter for real-time flux monitoring, a solar feed for sunlight injection, and a calibration system with a laser frequency comb and etalon for wavelength calibration. KPF was installed and commissioned at the W. M. Keck Observatory in late 2022 and early 2023 and is now in regular use for scientific observations. This paper presents an overview of the as-built KPF instrument and its subsystems, design considerations, and initial on-sky performance.",

        "abstract": "<div class=\"hlFld-Abstract\">\n<div class=\"article__section article__abstract hlFld-Abstract\">\n<div class=\"abstractSection abstractInFull\">\n<p>Finding ground states of quantum many-body systems is known to be hard for both classical and quantum computers. As a result, when Nature cools a quantum system in a low-temperature thermal bath, the ground state cannot always be found efficiently. Instead, Nature finds a local minimum of the energy. In this work, we study the problem of finding local minima in quantum systems under thermal perturbations. While local minima are much easier to find than ground states, we show that finding a local minimum is computationally hard for classical computers, even when the task is to output a single-qubit observable at any local minimum. In contrast, we prove that a quantum computer can always find a local minimum efficiently using a thermal gradient descent algorithm that mimics the cooling process in Nature. To establish the classical hardness of finding local minima, we consider a family of two-dimensional Hamiltonians such that any problem solvable by polynomial-time quantum algorithms can be reduced to finding local minima of these Hamiltonians. Therefore, cooling systems to local minima is universal for quantum computation, and, assuming quantum computation is more powerful than classical computation, finding local minima is classically hard and quantumly easy.</p>\n</div>\n</div>\n</div>",

Because shallow quantum circuits can generate distributions that are classically hard to sample from, existing learning algorithms do not apply. In this work, we present a polynomial-time classical algorithm for learning the description of any unknown&nbsp;<em>n</em>-qubit shallow quantum circuit&nbsp;<em>U</em>&nbsp;(with arbitrary unknown architecture) within a small diamond distance using single-qubit measurement data on the output states of&nbsp;<em>U</em>. We also provide a polynomial-time classical algorithm for learning the description of any unknown&nbsp;<em>n</em>-qubit state | &psi; \u27e9 =&nbsp;<em>U</em>&nbsp;| 0<sup><em>n</em></sup>&nbsp;\u27e9 prepared by a shallow quantum circuit&nbsp;<em>U</em> (on a 2D lattice) within a small trace distance using single-qubit measurements on copies of | &psi; \u27e9. Our approach uses a quantum circuit representation based on local inversions and a technique to combine these inversions. This circuit representation yields an optimization landscape that can be efficiently navigated and enables efficient learning of quantum circuits that are classically hard to simulate.</p>\n</div>\n</div>\n</div>",

        "abstract": "<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>We present the results of studies aimed at developing 4D tracking technology for a wide range of physics experiments, including the Electron Ion Collider (EIC) and future Lepton Colliders. The studies focused on evaluating the performance of centimeter-scale AC-LGAD (AC-Low Gain Avalanche Detector) sensors and a new ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) called the Fermilab Constant Fraction Discriminator (FCFD). For the AC-LGADs, we present the resolutions obtained with several prototypes, which reach simultaneous resolutions of 18 microns and 32 ps from strips of 1 cm length and 500 micron pitch. Regarding the FCFD, the mean time response for a wide range of signal amplitudes has been measured to be no more than 15 ps. This is orders of magnitude more precise than an uncorrected leading-edge discriminator-based measurement and effectively eliminates the need for a signal amplitude-based correction. Furthermore, the measured contribution to the time resolution from the FCFD ASIC is found to be 10 ps for signals with charges above 20 fC.</div>\n</div>\n</div>\n</div>",

        "abstract": "We present the low-cost, dual-polarized, wideband quad-ridge choke horn (QRCH) feed with a low-loss dielectric lid optimized for the Deep Synoptic Array (DSA-2000) in radio astronomy. The ridges and dielectric lid allows for a compact feed diameter with small blockage of the 5-meter-diameter axially-symmetric prime-focus reflector. A wide feed pattern suitable for applications with f/D below 0.35 is achieved over the frequency range 0.7-2 GHz. The band-average aperture efficiency in simulation is 66 % in the unshaped reflector including blockage. An extension of the reflector rim reduces the spillover noise contribution to less than 1 K at zenith pointing. Together with an excellent ambient temperature low-noise amplifier developed for DSA-2000 the predicted system noise temperature is 25 K.",

        "abstract": "<p>We present an approach for improving the effective well depth of a CMOS detector for use on a UV space telescope by using a combination of two techniques: a dual-gain readout mode and the use of a multi-exposure HDR algorithm. Non-destructive readout of the detector in a high-gain and a low-gain mode optimizes the dynamic range of a single exposure by taking advantage of the low read noise of the first mode and the high well depth of the second. The dynamic range can be further extended by the addition of a second, shorter exposure to probe the saturated regions of the initial exposure. We find that, for simulations of an SRI CMOS imager we are testing, its initial sensitivity to ~3 orders of magnitude in flux can be improved to a dynamic range of over 5.5 orders of magnitude (equivalent to a difference of ~14 AB magnitudes) by the combination of a 300 second dual-gain exposure and a 3 second low-gain exposure, with a low overhead in additional read time and computational complexity.</p>",

        "abstract": "Since the start of science operations in 1993, the twin 10-meter W. M. Keck Observatory (WMKO) telescopes have continued to maximize their scientific impact and to produce transformative discoveries that keep the observing community on the frontiers of astronomical research. Upgraded capabilities and new instrumentation are provided though collaborative partnerships with Caltech, the University of California, and the University of Hawaii instrument development teams, as well as industry and other organizations. This paper summarizes the performance of recently commissioned infrastructure projects, technology upgrades, and new additions to the suite of observatory instrumentation. We also provide a status of projects currently in design or development phases and, since we keep our eye on the future, summarize projects in exploratory phases that originate from our 2022 strategic plan developed in collaboration with our science community to adapt and respond to evolving science needs.",

        "abstract": "<p>We report wafer characterization of the S-parameters and microwave noise temperature of discrete GaAs and GaN HEMTs over a temperature range of 20 - 300 K. The measured noise temperature (T50) exhibits a dependence on physical temperature that is inconsistent with a constant drain temperature, with Td for the GaAs and GaN devices changing from ~ 2000 K and ~2800 K at room temperature to ~ 700 K and ~ 1800 K at cryogenic temperatures, respectively. The observed temperature dependence is qualitatively consistent with that predicted from a theory of drain noise based on real-space transfer of electrons from the channel to the barrier.</p>",

        "abstract": "This talk will discuss novel first-principles calcns. of charge carrier dynamics, which are broadly applicable to materials employed in renewable energy devices. Calcns. of charge transport and ultrafast dynamics have relied on heuristic approaches for the past several decades. Recent progress in combining d. functional theory and related methods with kinetic equations, such as the Boltzmann transport equation (BTE), are enabling spectacular advances in computing carrier dynamics in materials from first principles. A special role is played by the interaction between charge carriers and\nlattice vibrations, also known as the electron-phonon (e-ph) interaction, which dominates carrier dynamics near room temp. and at energies within a few eV of the band gap. We will discuss our recently developed methods to compute e-ph scattering processes from first principles, and show how these developments enable accurate calcns. of charge transport and ultrafast dynamics in materials, including: 1) Accurate calcns. of the electron mobility, leading to new insight into charge transport in polar semiconductors, perovskite oxides, and org. materials. We will also touch briefly on the computation of charge transport in the polaron regime. 2) The ultrafast dynamics of excited (so-called \"hot\") carriers, with application to lighting devices, solar energy conversion, and ultrafast spectroscopy. A new parallel algorithm to propagate in time the BTE for excited electrons and coupled electrons and phonons will be presented. A recent extension to include the elec. field in the BTE and accurately compute velocity-field curves in semiconductors will also be discussed. The talk will close with a discussion of PERTURBO, an open source code we are developing to make these calcns. available to the community.",

        "abstract": "The absorption spectra of mols. in the mid-IR (mid-IR) region are used for mol. anal., and the 5-15m wavelength range is sometimes called the fingerprint region, as it enables specific identification of mols. Mol. anal. using a mid-IR light source is typically performed using a Fourier-Transform IR Spectroscopy (FTIR) system. The delicate and complex optical alignment of such instruments limits the miniaturization of mid-IR spectrometers and increases the cost and size of the spectrometer. To solve this problem, we have developed a more robust spectrometer that combines a thermal imaging camera with a hyperspectral filter. This Fabry-Perot filter consists of two high-reflectivity Si/air mirrors that are assembled with a slight angle, so that the gradual change in the cavity gap between the two mirrors changes the resonant frequency of the filter. The variable filter disperses the broadband mid-IR light source to different frequencies, each assigned to a different pixel in the microbolometer array. The high refractive index contrast between silicon and air provides a large free spectral range, wide enough to cover a detection range of from 7 mm to 14 mm. By using a com.\nthermal imaging camera as detector and a Diesel engine glow plug as a source, we have demonstrated an inexpensive and robust spectrometer with no moving parts and rapid spectral acquisition. We present absorption spectra of various types of polymers, biomols. and drugs in the mid-IR region, obtained within 1 s, and compare these to spectra acquired with a conventional FTIR system.",

        "abstract": "Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) exhibit unusual electronic and optical properties. This talk will discuss novel first-principles calcns. of light absorption and emission in 2D-TMDs. First, we will show that visible light absorption per unit thickness in monolayer and few-layer TMDs is 1-2 orders of magnitudes greater than in conventional bulk semiconductors, and discuss application of TMDs to solar energy conversion. We will then introduce a formalism combining the ab initio Bethe-Salpeter equation with Fermi's golden rule to investigate light emission in 2DTMDs. We will show calcns. of the radiative lifetimes as a function of temp. in 2D-TMDs, which are in excellent\nagreement with expt. and provide new microscopic insights into exciton recombination in monolayers and heterobilayers. We will also address the anisotropic photoluminescence seen exptl. upon exciting TMDs with linearly polarized light. We generalize our radiative lifetime calcns. to obtain an equation for light emission as a function of angle and polarization, and show the presence of an inherently anisotropic photoluminescence due to the valley degeneracy of the lowest bright excitons. In closing, we will discuss our recent efforts on computing exciton-phonon interactions from first principles, and how these calcns. allow us to investigate nonequil. exciton dynamics in photoexcited 2D-TMDs.",

        "abstract": "Increasing global energy demands and climate change concerns related to energy use require developing\nenduring and efficient energy technologies. Supercapacitors could significantly contribute to energy technol. in\nthis respect due to their long cycle life and rapid charge/discharge capabilities. However, supercapacitors suffer\nfrom poor energy d. which severely limits their application. Because supercapacitors store energy capacitively at\nelectrode surfaces, one obvious strategy to improve energy d. is to use high surface area and high capacitance\nelectrode materials. Graphene nanoribbons, long and narrow strips of graphene, are a promising\nsupercapacitor electrode material due to (i) good elec. cond., (ii) high surface area as a two-dimensional\nmaterial, and (iii) abundant edges which have enhanced capacitance compared to the graphene basal plane.\nCurrent graphene nanoribbon fabrication procedures are either unscalable or incorporate polymer and/or\nmetal contaminants, but we have developed a high yield bottom-up PECVD synthesis of high quality\ngraphene nanoribbons. Deposition takes place at ca. 500 mTorr in a 0.5 in. (outer diam.) quartz tube on\ncopper foil in a hydrogen/methane plasma with 1,2-dichlorobenzene precursor. Graphene nanoribbon growth\nbegins as benzene radicals seed onto copper foil, and arom./methane carbon species propagate growth.\nCharacterization confirms the synthesis of graphene nanoribbons. Raman spectroscopy measurements show\nG and 2D peaks corresponding to graphene structure and a strong D peak corresponding to graphene edge\nstates. UPS measurements reveal a work function of 4.45 eV compared to 4.5 eV for pristine graphene. EDS\nand SAD measurements in a TEM confirm at. purity and a hexagonal lattice consistent with graphene. Finally,\nSEM images demonstrate high aspect ratios with widths less than 500 nm and lengths greater than 5 \u03bcm.\nAlthough these graphene nanoribbons are too wide for many applications, this represents a starting point for\ndeveloping a very large scale integrable synthesis of graphene nanoribbons as we are able to produce\ngraphene nanoribbons at a rate of 0.05 mg/cm2/min. Graphene nanoribbons have been characterized for\nsupercapacitor application and demonstrate excellent power and energy densities.",

Charge carriers are\nscattered by quasiparticles and excitations in materials\n(e.g. phonons, defects, photons, electrons, holes, etc.)\n\nPERTURBO is a robust platform to study these\nelectron scattering processes using first-principles\ncalculations and many-body perturbation theory.\nPERTURBO fills a void in the software ecosystem to\ndesign advanced materials, and will foster scientific\nand technological innovation.\n\nPERTURBO combines new computational methods\ndeveloped in our group. The code implementation\nadopts modern programming practices (HDF5,\nversion control, MPI/OpenMP) and will be distributed\nunder the standard open GPL license.",

        "abstract": "We report on laboratory testing and telescope integration of SuperCam, a 64 pixel imaging spectrometer designed for operation in the astrophysically important 870 micron atmospheric window. SuperCam will be used to answer fundamental questions about the physics and chemistry of molecular clouds in the Galaxy and their direct relation to star and planet formation. The Supercam key project is a fully sampled Galactic plane survey covering over 500 square degrees of the Galaxy in ^(12)CO(3-2) and ^(13)CO(3-2) with 0.3 km/s velocity resolution. \n\nSuperCam will have several times more pixels than any existing spectroscopic imaging array at submillimeter wavelengths. The exceptional mapping speed that will result, combined with the efficiency and angular resolution provided by the HHT will make SuperCam a powerful instrument for probing the history of star formation in our Galaxy and nearby galaxies. SuperCam will be used to answer fundamental questions about the physics and chemistry of molecular clouds in the Galaxy and their direct relation to star and planet formation. Through Galactic surveys, particularly in CO and its isotopomers, the impact of Galactic environment on these phenomena will be realized. These studies will serve as \"finder charts\" for future focused research (e.g. with ALMA) and markedly improve the interpretation, and enhance the value of numerous\ncontemporary surveys. \n\nIn the past, all heterodyne focal plane arrays have been constructed using discrete mixers, arrayed in the focal plane. SuperCam reduces cryogenic and mechanical complexity by integrating multiple mixers and amplifiers into a single array module with a single set of DC and IF connectors. These modules are housed in a closed-cycle cryostat with a 1.5W capacity 4K cooler. The Supercam instrument is currently undergoing laboratory testing with four of the eight mixer array modules installed in the cryostat (32 pixels). Work is now underway to perform the necessary modifications at the 10m Heinrich Hertz Telescope to accept the Supercam system. Supercam will be installed in the cassegrain cabin of the HHT, including the optical system, IF processing, spectrometers and control electronics. Supercam will be integrated with the HHT during the 2009-2010 observing season with 32 pixels installed. The system will be upgraded to 64 pixels during the summer of 2010 after assembly of the four additional mixer modules is completed.",

        "abstract": "Using data accumulated with the Solar Isotope Spectrometer on ACE during 27 large solar energetic pa1ticle (SEP) events the effects of charge-to-mass (Q/M) fractionation\non rare elements arc examined. In an attempt to correct for these fractionation effects and obtain preliminary\nestimates of the coronal abundances of K, Ti, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn, the SEP events are classified according to their Fe/Si ratio. The data from all events within an Fe/Si category are summed and the rare element abundances extracted over an energy interval of 20 to 65 MeV/nucleon. We estimated the apparent Q/M fractionation, corrected for it, and obtained initial results which are encouraging.",
